Inside the Health Stack of Matt Dixon
Matt Dixon is the founder and head coach at Purple Patch Fitness. A world-renowned endurance coach and former professional triathlete, Matt brings decades of experience guiding athletes, executives, and high performers to reach their full potential. We sat down with Matt to explore his personal approach to health and wellness—and the products he relies on to stay at his best.
Tell us about yourself—what are your personal passions or hobbies outside of work?
Outside of my deeply fulfilling role at Purple Patch Fitness, life revolves around my family—my wife, Kelli, and our twelve-year-old son, Baxter. As an only child, Baxter creates a “Three Musketeers” dynamic at home, which is tremendous fun. Kelli and I love supporting his ever-evolving passions, whether it’s playing in a band, swimming, or flag football. He’s also into cooking, hiking, and mountain biking—all things we’re fortunate to enjoy thanks to the incredible outdoors we call home.
Beyond family, I’m a lifelong endurance athlete. Historically, I was a reluctant strength trainer, but as I navigate my early 50s, I’ve embraced it. Strength work is now core to my routine, and I feel better physically and mentally because of it. I still love trail running and cycling, but I’ve learned to appreciate the growth that comes from stepping outside my comfort zone.
I’m also a big fan of live music (though I don’t get to enough shows!) and an avid listener of podcasts and audiobooks—particularly Scandinavian crime thrillers. I stay engaged with world events and politics, though I try not to take things too personally, recognizing the limits of what I can control.
What role does health and wellness play in your life?
Health and wellness are central to everything I do. They provide:
A foundation for longevity and quality of life. I want to stay active and capable well into the future.
A driver of high performance. Consistent strength and endurance training fuels my energy, cognitive function, and leadership—how I show up as a coach, partner, and parent.
A daily anchor for mental clarity. Exercise is often the one consistent moment in my day that’s truly mine. It’s a reset button that allows me to give more to others.
A platform for personal growth. I actively seek challenges that push me beyond my comfort zone. Whether it’s a seven-day cycling trip in the Alps or a 50-mile trail race, it’s not about the finish line—it’s about the evolution along the way.
That said, I’m not obsessive. I enjoy beer, pizza, and burgers as much as training. It’s all about balance.
Tell us about your health protocol—what does your fitness routine look like?
I move every day. My weekly routine includes:
Strength training twice a week
Two high-intensity indoor bike trainer sessions (which I coach)
Regular social runs with my active dog, anywhere from 40 to 90 minutes
Plenty of outdoor activities—hiking, biking, exploring
On the nutrition front, I focus on protein, vegetables, and carbohydrates—three solid meals a day, plus snacks as needed. I hydrate with more than 3 liters of water daily, fueled by a love for morning coffee and English breakfast tea (that’s in my DNA!).
Sleep is also non-negotiable. I’m usually in bed by 9 PM and up at 5 AM, and I sleep well.
What’s a fun fact about yourself that people might not expect?
I grew up with two brothers, and out of the three of us, I was the one totally dedicated to sports—competitive swimming with dreams of making the British Olympic Team, then professional triathlon.
Yet, despite being the “serious athlete” in the family, I’m the only one who isn’t a world champion! My middle brother is a Masters World Champion in swimming. My eldest brother? He’s a World Champion in the annual Hay Bale Pushing Championship (yes, that’s a thing—country life at its finest).
So I guess I’m the underachiever in the family!
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I believe people are far stronger than they realize. One of my greatest joys is witnessing someone take that first small step toward a big personal challenge, embrace the journey, and accomplish far more than they thought possible. Growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone.
