From the Gridiron to Game-Changing Wellness: How Momentous CEO Jeff Byers Is Redefining the Supplement Industry

Momentous

NFL vet turned wellness CEO Jeff Byers shares how Momentous is reshaping supplements with science, transparency, and the “anti-supplement” mindset. A must-read and watch for health truth seekers.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the health and wellness space is full of noise.

As the Co-Founder and CEO of Workup, I’ve made it my mission to elevate brands that actually walk the walk when it comes to quality, transparency and science-backed wellness.

So when I had the opportunity to sit down with Jeff Byers, the co-founder and CEO of Momentous, I knew I wasn’t just speaking with a fellow founder. I was speaking with a leader on a mission to clean up one of the most confusing and crowded corners of the health world: supplements.

What Jeff is building at Momentous isn’t just another supplement brand. It’s what he calls the anti-supplement supplement company - a label that might sound contradictory at first, but makes complete sense once you hear his philosophy.

In this interview, I sat down with Jeff to unpack his journey - from biotech and football to high-performance health innovation. What emerges is a refreshingly honest look at leadership, standards and the long game of building a company that lasts.

Read on for a summary of our conversation and watch the full interview here.

From NFL Lineman to Reluctant Supplement CEO

Before founding Momentous, Jeff played in the NFL and captained the USC football team. After retiring, he co-founded Amp Human, a biotech-born performance company that partnered with elite military and pro sports organizations.

They weren’t even trying to build a supplement brand.

“I never wanted to be a supplement company founder,” Jeff told me. “That was not my goal, not my vision, not my dream. The industry felt so noisy, so untrustworthy.”

But in 2020, COVID forced the company to rethink its strategy. Jeff realized that while supplements were ubiquitous, quality supplements backed by science and integrity were rare. So they leaned in and eventually merged with Momentous, a brand built on the foundation of quality, NSF certification and elite athletic partnerships.

The “Anti-Supplement” Approach

I asked Jeff to unpack what he means by calling Momentous an “anti-supplement supplement company.” His answer stuck with me:

“Supplements don’t fix everything. Less is more. Let’s focus on the foundations - protein, omega-3s, creatine - and stop majoring in the minors. That alone is radically different in our industry.”

Most supplement companies chase what’s trendy. Momentous does the opposite.

They don’t lead with hype. They lead with simplicity, science and standards which is why they’ve earned trust across the NFL, the Department of Defense and among world-class researchers and clinicians.

The Momentous Three: What Really Moves the Needle

At Workup and Longevity Today, I often talk about building a health stack around evidence-based basics. So when Jeff introduced what he calls the Momentous Three - protein, omega-3s and creatine - I had to nod in agreement.

“If people just focused on these three consistently, they’d be in a much better place. They’re foundational. They’re not sexy. But they work.”

He’s right. These three compounds are backed by thousands of studies and decades of clinical use. And yet most people still chase the latest mushroom elixir or unproven peptide before getting the basics right.

That’s where Momentous differentiates, by investing in the boring-but-effective fundamentals, and doing them exceptionally well.

So, What Should I Take?

Like Jeff, I get this question all the time. So I asked him how he handles it.

“I used to just tell people what I took,” he said. “But that’s misleading. I played in the NFL. I’ve had injuries, brain trauma, orthopedic issues - my needs aren’t the same as yours.”

Instead, Jeff and his team worked with their advisors - top-tier dietitians, performance coaches and researchers—to build a hierarchy of need across their product portfolio. At the top sit the Momentous Three. Below that are condition-specific products for sleep, cognitive function and training support, always rooted in what the data supports.

It’s a structured, honest way to help consumers find what actually fits their needs.

On Cutting Through the Wellness Noise

At Workup, we know how hard it is for brands to stand out in a market full of snake oil. So I asked Jeff: how do you cut through the clutter?

“It’s hard,” he admitted. “Everyone claims quality. Everyone says they’re used by pro athletes. But most of it’s smoke and mirrors. We sell into every NFL team. That’s different from just sending them a free tub.”

Momentous doesn’t just rely on paid media to tell their story. They leverage credible voices like Dr. Jeremy London, Dr. Stacy Sims and Dr. Andrew Huberman - who vet the brand deeply before associating their name with it.

“These people have massive platforms,” Jeff said, “but they don’t lend their names lightly. Their trust in Momentous is one of our strongest assets.”

Doing the Right Thing (Even When It Hurts)

One of the most powerful parts of our conversation was when we shifted to leadership. I asked Jeff how he’s stayed true to his mission. especially when the temptation to scale quickly or expand too fast could lead to short-term gains.

“Doing the right thing hurts,” he said. “But it won’t kill you. And if you do it long enough, it builds something that lasts.”

Momentous has passed on countless opportunities to cut corners, launch trend-driven products, or lower their standards. But Jeff has held the line.

“You build a resilient business by making hard decisions,” he said. “And when your team sees you make those decisions, they start making better ones too.”

That resonated deeply with me. At Workup, we’ve had to make similar choices, staying focused on quality, not quantity. Elevating brands we truly believe in. And helping people filter out the fluff so they can live better, longer lives.

Shared Values: Workup & Momentous

As our conversation wrapped up, I reflected on how aligned our missions really are.

“Both of our companies,” I told Jeff, “are trying to bring truth and transparency to a space that desperately needs it.”

He agreed. And he took it a step further:

“If we can inspire people to make better decisions, to understand their health, and to trust that some companies really do care—we win. And more importantly, they win.”

Final Thoughts

Interviewing Jeff reminded me that true leadership in wellness isn’t about noise. It’s about signal. It’s about showing up, doing the work and holding the bar higher than the industry asks you to.

And most of all, it’s about impact.

“Momentous will outlive me,” Jeff said. “It’s my job to make sure it stands for something real.”

If that’s not the definition of purpose-driven entrepreneurship, I don’t know what is.
